How To Control Anxiety

How to control anxiety in our modern age?  Considering it is quite different from times past, in that we are in a society where we want it all now. We have been conditioned to believe that anything, including all of our problems can and thus should be fixed instantly and with out effort.

Our “get it all now” mindset permeates to all areas of our lives, including any health issues we have. As such it can be understood why the majority of us determine that a visit to the doctor to get a fast acting prescription drug is our first answer to any medical condition.

This includes the mental health arena. This is why Prozac is consistently one of the most prescribed drugs world wide. Also anxiety medications like Diazepam and Wellbutrin and other such anxiety medications are so abundantly used as the fix all for how to control anxiety or any depression issue. However before anyone takes any medication it is important to understand the side effects and negatives of the medication.

The main negative issue surrounding using medication during your periods of severe anxiety is that, at a time in the near future, you will have to cease taking the medicine.

Or make the conscious decision that you are going to live the rest of your life taking medication and live in a drug aided state. The fact is that each and every anxiety medication has a sedative component to it, it may be mild, but it is there. This can result in you feeling tired and some what lethargic. This relaxed state is in fact the goal of these medications.

Relaxing your mind with medication in turn relaxes the anxiety. Which may be fine for some people, but the main thing to understand is this is only a short term solution. If you stop taking the medication the problem comes back. It is not a cure and not the first means I use to teach people  how to control anxiety.

Even though the anxiety medication has the ability to dull your anxiety attack, it will not cure it. When we teach people how to control anxiety, we explain that there is not a anxiety prescription medication on the market that will cure the illness, they will simply lessen its impact.

So unless you’re able to deal with the fact that you’ll be medicated for the duration of your life, it may make more sense to search after a form of therapy with a psychiatrist or psychologist instead of taking pills daily, if you really want to learn how to control anxiety that is.  It very well may be a lengthier process, however the end result will be that you may be cured permanently or at least much longer.
